Making Iraq into Vietnam

November 12, 2005

“It’s a dangerous day for our national security when an administration’s word is no good,” Kerry said.” That’s John Kerry of Vietnam “atrocities” fame preaching to the American public about lying. I guess you could call him a Subject Matter Expert on lying about a war.

Now you can see why he keeps harping on Iraq being the same “quagmire” as Vietnam was. He made his political bones by accusing the administration of the time of lying. Of course, since the end justifies the means, since the end - fame and power for the one who stopped the war in Iraq - is such a “good” thing. Unfortunately for Kerry and the other liberals who are anti-Iraq war, they can’t see any farther than their own show of political and media power.

What happens if the US pulls out of Iraq? Is it simply that Iraq falls back into a political morass of dictatorial government ala Vietnam? Or is there something more that we should be worried about happening?

The likelihood of Osama bin Laden and other Islamic radicals setting up a growth business in terrorism and destruction is a near certainty. Although Saddam may have worked with terrorists, he wasn’t as weak as the Sudanese or Afghan governments, nor as unable to control his territory as the Afghan and Pakistani governments regarding their common border area. The would-be new Caliph Osama just loves to find weak or non-existant government regions to set up shop. He’s a warlord like any other, cloaking himself in the banner of political (caliphate) and moral/religious (Islam) acceptability.

That’s the problem with tactical victories and tactical approaches to problems - you don’t see beyond the next immediate objective. In chess, that would be falling for a sacrifice that sets you up for ‘mate.
